THE SANUSI ENDOWMENT AND ITS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE SCIENTIFIC AND MILITARY FIELDS IN LIBYA (1843 - 1969)

Abstract The current study aims to clarify the role of the Senussi Endowment in the scientific and military fields in Libya during the period of the founding of Zawiyat al-Bayda in Barqah in 1843 until the fall of the Senussi state in 1969. The study follows an analytical investigation approach to describe historical events and facts related to the subject of the study. The problem of the study is to show the important events in the history of the Senussi movement in Libya and the extent of its contribution to the scientific and military fields. The study concluded several results, the most important of which is that the Senussi Endowment played an important role in developing the scientific and military fields in Libya. The Sanusi movement established schools and educational institutions concerned with teaching the Holy Qur’an, Sharia sciences, and the Arabic language, which contributed to enhancing the level of education in the region and transmitting religious and cultural knowledge. In addition, the Sanusi movement stressed the importance of legal education and understanding religion correctly. It provided lessons in jurisprudence, interpretation, and hadith, which contributed to making people aware of the foundations of Islam and its teachings. In the military field, the Senussi movement participated in battles against European colonialism in the region, had a prominent role in organizing resistance against colonial powers, and transferred military knowledge and experiences to members of society, contributing to building defence capabilities and enhancing military awareness among people. The Senussi movement also worked to promote critical thinking, urged people to investigate and scrutinize information, and called for research and benefiting from the experiences and knowledge available in the fields of defence and military.
