Abstract:
This study aimed at evaluating the efficiency of the teaching of English at the Institutes of Vocational Training in Algeria from the teachers’ perception. The sample of study represented 10 teachers in the city of Algiers. In order to achieve the aims of the study, the researchers used a Likert’s 5-scale format questionnaire that was administered to the English teachers. This questionnaire consisted of 25 items grouped in 5 domains which aimed to evaluate different aspects of the ESP training program, namely its ‘aims and objectives’, ‘the trainers’, ‘the training materials’, ‘evaluation and assessment techniques’ and ‘aids and facilities’ provided for the learners by these institutes. The results of the study have shown that the teachers were dissatisfied with the training program regardless to their qualifications, experience or vocational background. However, their perceptions of three areas of the program, namely ‘training materials’, ‘the trainers’, and ‘evaluation and assessment’ were higher. The study recommends more studies that investigate teaching ESP in Algeria in more areas and giving more attention to the training needs in the country.
